● 5 YEAR
TREND IN U.S. PLASTIC SURGERY
Increased Demand for Minimally Invasive Procedures
|
|
New five year trending data included in the American Society
of Plastic Surgeons 2004 statistics shows cosmetic procedures
are up 24 percent from 2000.
There were 1.7 million surgical cosmetic procedures performed
in 2004, representing a decrease of 2% from 2003. Minimally
invasive procedures increased 7 percent in 2004 to nearly 7.5
million procedures.
The most popular surgical cosmetic procedures were: liposuction
(325,000), nose reshaping (305,000), breast augmentation (264,000),
eyelid surgery (233,000) and facelift (114,000).
The top five minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were: Botox
(3 million), chemical peel (1.1 million), microdermabrasion
(859,000), laser hair removal (574,000), and sclerotherapy (545,000).
Chemical peels, which also include alpha hyroxy, beta hydorxy,
and AFAs, have consistently remained in the top five most popular
non-invasive procedures. The use of chemical peels as a stand
alone procedure, and as an adjunct to IPL treatments, accounts
for peels bypassing microdermabrasion and again assuming their
former spot as the second most popular non-invasive procedure.
At the 2005 American Academy of Dermatology meeting, Dr. Joel
Schlessinger stated that peels like the new AFA Clay Body Peel
represent a viable alternative to lasers in treating bony areas,
such as the chest and hands. According to Dr. Schlessinger,
bony areas are not conducive to laser/IPL treatment due to the
increased risk of burning and irritation that can result from
such procedures. Specifically formulated peels are also gaining
popularity as a combination treatment that enhances the results
obtained by IPLs and microdermabrasion.
The growth of minimally invasive procedures can also be attributed
to the new injectable dermal fillers that have entered the market.
An increasing number of patients are considering injectable
fillers to prolong or avoid facelifts, forehead lifts, and eyelid
surgeries.
The American Society for Plastic Surgeons estimates that more
than 1.8 million cosmetic injections were performed in U.S.
The demand for hyaluronic acid injectable fillers (Restylane
and Hylaform) increased 927 percent in 2004. Botox injections
increased 4 percent in 2004 and 280 percent since 2000.
Physicians can now use a longer lasting filler, such as the
non-animal Restylane (versus bovine derived Collagen), as an
alternative to the third most popular surgical procedure, blepharoplasty.
While this alternative is not permanent and is not appropriate
for patients who have large メbagsモ with little depression, many
doctors consider it viable for those patients who want to delay
or avoid surgery.
Patients satisfied with the results obtained from the injectable
hyaluronic acid fillers can then opt to have the physician inject
a longer lasting filler such as Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite.
All annual statistics released by various societies demonstrate
a dramatic increase in minimally invasive procedures.
